Finding You Own Painting Style...

I thought this article today by John P. Weiss a really great read! Deeply resonated with me and I am sure a few others. Click on the link to read the full article.

My pal Jeremy Lipking gets a well deserved mention. Now there's a guy that has found his style and then some! He is deservedly winning every award around this year including the Prix de West and ARC. Catch his upcoming one day workshop July 26th.

The Problem With Painting Workshops

by John P. Weiss

So here's the deal. Take those workshops, copy those museum masterpieces until you've reached a level of true proficiency. Then stop all that. Pack up your paint box easel and spend some serious time digesting the world around you. Slow down, even when you think you're wasting time. Study, think, experiment, and stop trying to ape someone else. Inside you is a unique voice. It has been whispering in your ear for a long time, waiting for you to blossom. [...]

The Joys of Quick Sketch

I love a bit of quick sketch with pen and ink and watercolor. It can all go south real fast or it can go just right. Fresh and spontaneous.

Today's sketch was somewhere in between. I'll be doing some quick sketch during my summer workshop. Join me. Only a couple of spaces left.

Zenday Best

Every day is Zenday when you get to paint beautiful muses. I love painting this lady. She is an artiste herself, and a wonderful singer. I just love her zenergy.

This was from my teaching class yesterday, now at my studio. Was thinking of Phillip de Laszlo who painted great 'red haired' people in portraits, especially his son.

It's been a brilliant five weeks with some great work going on in the teaching room. Both figure and still life. New semester starting next Wednesday, drop ins welcome.

Only a couple of spots left, email me for details. johanna@johannaspinks.com

Master Show, Master Artist, "Kinstler&Hollywood"

Wonderful weekend visiting Everett Raymond Kinstler's new show "Kinstler & Hollywood" at The Mountainsong Galleries in Carmel. The opening reception was a smash. Lots of inspiration and fun. The show is up for another month. Please don't miss it. SPECTACULAR!

Here is a closeup of one of my favorites in the show by this great man, a true master. ERK has painted seven American presidents in his lifetime, most of Hollywood and has over 100 pieces in The Smithsonian. WOW.  I am so fortunate to call him also my dear friend and mentor.

More to come later.
