Riding Home...365 Days of Drawing...

For yesterday's drawing, I revisited my cowboy class demo from the day before, doing him on a new smaller canvas. I often do this if I feel I might learn something.

I had been somewhat unhappy with my drawing on the previous demo. I felt the shapes could have been sharper. . and there were a fair few distractions within the teaching room set-up which is as it should be.

So I sketched him again from the previous head study on a smaller canvas quietly with a ball point pen. I thought it was worth putting paint on.

And this is how he rode home...

"Steadfast", oil on linen, 10" x 6.5"

I thought yesterday's cowboy study was wonderful -- something about it I just loved. It was fresh and spontaneous and bold, but today it's even more wonderful! And I can see how you improved it. Bravo!

thanks Shelley...I find it super interesting to do another sketch from a life sketch. Your comments are interesting because you saw the first one. I can see the first had vigor and brushwork, was competent, a certain energy you only get from painting from life, but it lacked for me a certain finesse and SOUL. of the sitter. The second one's face tells the story a bit more of the thoughtful cowboy.
