More Comps...365 Days of Drawing
Another compositional sketch for yesterday's drawing challenge working things out for a posthumous portrait that will probably be life-size. Background, light flow, pose, etc. etc.
Interesting, Johanna... So help me understand all that doing these compositional sketches tells you.... Is it just placement or is it the practice or getting your mind into the subject... You mentioned lighting of course...
Do you do a lot of these and then choose the most pleasing??? How does it all work??
YOu pretty much nailed it Marian. Yes, it helps me not only get into the subject but work out where I am going with the whole painting. Composition, value massing, light flow. I will do as many as I need to work out the path ahead.
I will also show the client the suggested route with the sketch. That is always tricky. No matter how much you tell them "it's only a sketch", you will hear a comment or two.
But the process is invaluable to me. And usually a client's 'comment or two' on the sketch, will bring up some useful pointers to remember for the finished painting.
