Malo has to be one of the most beautiful women in the world, both inside and out. When she walked into my teaching class at CAI yesterday, I knew that my heart wasn't in painting anyone or anything that day. A day on the beach in Hawaii was what I had in mind.
I decided to get a big brush out, slap some thick brushstrokes down, concentrating on planes and simple form-hugging five values - and leave it at that. Some of my best head studies from life have actually been painted this way, when I don't over-noodle.
This is far from what I would have liked to have painted of Malo but it DID meet the drawing challenge for the day and the drawing block-in was good.
Sorry Malo. I didn't do you justice.

I really like the loose edgy drawing. The energy and style says a lot. I enjoy these kind of spontaneous pictures. In picture no.2, she is the most beautiful woman in the world. I think you may have done her justice.
Catherine...you made my day, thanks so much for the thoughtful post...I relied on my valued art training on this one...all thanks to my mentor, E.R. Kinstler. Go for an almost charicature of the head. Then bring it down.
Well I'm not sure what Malo looks like in person, but this does look like the most beautiful girl...so lovely and graceful!
She is stunning Johanna! I agree with Catherine your initial drawing is fabulous and has such a great expressive quality to it. The second, more refined painting just glows!
I don't think my post went through just now, so I'll re-type it:
As a child, I used to watch my mother sketch an image on canvas, and over a period of hours or days, her artistry would render a beautiful image, just as I see you do, Johanna. Perhaps that's why I'm attracted to your art--it feels like "home."

David: what a lovely thing to say. I am honored.
A great exercise and beautiful job, Johanna. It looks like you had a lot of fun.
