Ocean Frenzy - How to Paint Waves?

30 x 15
Commissioned Boat Portrait

Real time studio view

Waves are I believe one of the hardest things to paint. My mentor Everett Raymond Kinstler,  N.A., painter of seven American presidents, told me so once. He should know. I think hands come second. My students have a terrible time with them. I also have to keep myself constantly in check around painting hands. Roses come third. Students go into a complete tizzy around white roses especially.  I sometimes do too! So the key?  It is always about the structure. Study the structure of a wave. Study the structure of a hand. Study the structure of a rose. I continue to do all three. And, truth be told, there are no short cuts. YOU CAN PAINT ALL THREE WELL WITH HOMEWORK.

My New Face of Malibu, Christine Hameline

Another portrait, another life story.
My newest "Face of Malibu" sitter, Christine Hameline, featured in today's Malibu Times.
Single two hour life sitting. No photos.
16" x !6"

Christine is the new president of The Malibu Chamber of Commerce and a top realtor in town. The sitting was a breeze. We talked so much I hardly realized I was painting. I love it when it flows like that. Read more about Christine's life story here:

The Perfect Still Life

"Breakfast at Tiffanys"
My class demo at The California Art Institute
16 x 20

I consider big picture hats with flowers the perfect still life. The person sitting underneath is almost a sidebar. Sorry person underneath! This was a demo done in my teaching class. It feels good to be back teaching after quite a long break due to surgery. I learn a lot from teaching - and I get to paint crazy big hats as part of the fun.

JOIN ME WEDNESDAY MORNINGS AT CAI. It is a great group of artists. More information here

How to Paint Multiple Figure Compositions

"Mint Julips"
High Days and Holidays Collection
By Johanna Spinks
For purchase please go to My Online Store

What can I say about doing multiple figure compositions? They sure are fun and you have to just 'go for it' and let the brush fly but not before some careful planning. Planning, that is the most important thing.
